Advice From Someone Semi-Qualified

I have a love/hate relationship with fashion. Part of me enjoys making a statement with my clothes. We’re all familiar with the boost in confidence you get from an on-point outfit or the spring in your step from those shoes you spent your paycheck on. Then there’s the days I couldn’t care less about what I wear. As if waking up and facing my day wasn’t enough of a challenge, dressing myself? No thank you. I’ll throw on the first pair of pants I can’t remember wearing, a dirty shirt, and book it to 7 am class. Sometimes it can feel like I’m the only person who functions like this, but I know I’m not alone. So how do we fight this? How do we fight our own will to bargain those extra 10 minutes of sleep for looking hot that day?

The answer I’ve come up with is a simple one. Wake up earlier? Yep. Set out your clothes the night before? Sure. Make your appearance your top priority for the day? If you want. I’ve tried them all and ended up rockin’ sweatpants twice in a week (sorry plastics). The best fix for this trivial problem lies in your wardrobe. A few years ago I realized that if I only bought clothes that I really really liked, I could probably throw on anything in my closet and be happy with the outcome. And I don’t just mean liking the appearance of a garment, but rather appreciating all the aspects of an item of clothing. It feels better to buy and wear something you know was made locally, by a friend or neighbor. Shopping from a small business means you know your money is helping a regular person support their family or build their brand. With a wardrobe full of clothing you can be proud of, there’s no chance you’ll leave the house not ready to slay the day.
